Frequently Asked Questions
When and where is Worship?
Worship is at 5:00 pm every Sunday evening. We meet at Shaw’s Bar & Grill, which is located at: 1051 W Magnolia Ave. Fort Worth, TX, 76104. We often meet on the patio, but if the weather is bad, you’ll find us inside. The only Sundays we may not meet are when major holidays fall on a Sunday. Follow us on social media or sign-up for our email list for schedule updates.
Is this a real church?
Yes, but perhaps it depends how you define church. Kyrie is not a production. We don’t have salaried staff or a big budget. We are a gathering of folks trying to love God, love people, try to do some good, and together discern what that all means. We think that’s the very essence of church.
What is it like to attend church in a bar?
It is casual and laid back. You can sit back and just listen-in or say hi to someone new. You can participate in Communion or not (all are welcome at the Communion table, without exception). Stay a while or just for a bit. Your kids can be loud and run around. We don’t have ritualized membership, but if you come several times, we’ll call you a ‘regular.’
Does Kyrie Pub Church follow the Bible?
Yes, we believe the Bible is the Word of God. We read from the Bible at our gatherings each week and our preaching is Bible-based. We encourage biblical literacy, creativity, and freedom of thought, and we offer regular opportunities for biblical and theological reflection. We also uphold that there is wisdom in many faith traditions. Without agenda, we seek to know and love our neighbors who have various beliefs about God, or who are agnostic or atheist.
Is Kyrie affiliated with a certain denomination?
Yes. While our leadership comes from several different Christian denominations, we are affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA: https://www.elca.org/), and were founded by a pastor from that tradition.
What does Kyrie Pub Church believe?
While there is freedom of thought at Kyrie Pub Church and many denominations are represented among our regular attendees, our beliefs generally align with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). You may read more about those beliefs here: https://www.elca.org/About/What-We-Believe. The ELCA also upholds several social statements on contemporary issues. Those statements may be found here: Social Statements – Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (elca.org). Please reach out to us and request to speak with one of our leaders if you would like to know more about what we believe and why.
Is Kyrie Pub Church Handicap Accessible?
Yes. There is a ramp in the front of the restaurant, and the back door is also accessible. If we can provide additional accommodations for your specific needs, we will make every effort to do so. Please feel free to email us at Kyriefw@gmail.com.
Does Kyrie Pub Church Baptize people?
Yes. We are rooted in a tradition that practices infant Baptism, but support and practice Baptism at all ages. Please email us or speak to one of our pastors if you are interested in Baptism or want to know more about what Baptism is all about.
Can I participate in Communion at Kyrie?
Yes, we believe that Communion is God’s table and should be open to all people who feel called to receive it. There are no requirements you must meet to come to the table. If you do not wish to partake for any reason, you may simply stay in your seat or come forward to request a blessing from the Communion minister.
Do Kyrie leaders officiate LGBTQIA+ weddings?
Yes. This is part of our commitment as an RIC Church (https://www.reconcilingworks.org/ric/). It is also part of the personal and theological conviction of our entire leadership team.
What if I don’t drink?
Kyrie supports you and does not specifically encourage or discourage alcohol consumption. On any given Sunday, you will find folks responsibly imbibing, and folks who are not. We support both of these choices.
What if I struggle with alcoholism?
If you struggle with alcoholism, Kyrie may not be the right setting for you. If you struggle with alcoholism and you do choose to make Kyrie your home church, please speak to someone on our leadership team about how we can best support you in your sobriety. We do not have a theological stance against alcohol at Kyrie, but we do support healthy and abundant living, knowing that looks different to different folks.
